The 5 Gyres Institute

5 GyresThe 5 Gyres Institute, for a planet free of plastic pollution, is a non-profit organization dedicated to researching the issue of plastics in the world’s oceans, and engaging communities in systemic change.

Today, about 50% of the world's trash goes to landfills or incineration. The other half is officially unaccounted for. But researchers, and any of us who live near waterways, know that trash goes downhill, and the ocean is as "downhill" as it gets.

In 2011, 5 Gyres completed the first global survey of plastic marine pollution, finding evidence of plastic across all 5 subtropical "gyres," oceanic current systems where plastic waste accumulates. Of the 267 samples 5 Gyres has collected from the gyres, only two did not contain plastic.

We don't have accurate measures of how much trash is entering our waters each year, but it's estimated that 90% of this trash is plastic. Single-use, disposable plastics are a major part of the plastic pollution equation. A full 50% of all plastics produced are designed for single-use. And the rate of use is astonishing. For example, 60,000 plastic bags are consumed every second worldwide.

gDiapers' partnership with 5 Gyres was established in 2013. In spring 2014, gDiapers released the Great White Shark gPants and Clean Water tee, whose sales support clean-up efforts during the June 2014 Viking Gyre Expedition. Through product innovation and in partnership with our customers, gDiapers is committed to creating solutions for a future free of plastic pollution.
