The great diaper debate. Which is best?

clothdisposablesgdiapers

In an easier world we wouldn’t need diapers. In fact many parents would successfully practice "elimination communication" (google it), effectively reducing the amount of diapers needed. Still, the truth is most families need to decide which diaper system to use on their baby. But which one? Over the last 20 years a great debate has raged over which diaper system has the least impact on the environment, cloth or disposable. Then along came gDiapers, a hybrid diaper that touts the best of both worlds. And so the debate intensifies.

As parents we wish there was a fair and balanced study of all three options, the straight poop, so to speak. But alas there isn’t, yet.

In an effort to offer you an apples-to-apples comparison of cloth, disposable and gDiapers, we have compiled several independent studies and translated them into language we all understand. Naturally, we hope you’ll choose gDiapers. But the important thing is to have all the information right in front of you. Just like reading labels at the grocery store (which we know you do!).

Here are the important points to consider when assessing the environmental impact of a diaper system.

  1. How are they made and what is the impact?
  2. How are they used and what is the impact?
  3. How are they disposed and what is the impact?
Last year alone, 18-23 billion diapers went into landfills across America¹. That works out to be approximately 38,000 every minute and adds up to about 3.5 million tons of waste!

¹ Estimates vary: 1989 EPA figures quote 18 billion per annum.
