Why are the flushables so good for my garden?
If the soiled flushable is just wet, you can use it in your home compost. Urine is a rich source of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. In fact, 80% of human waste has some fertilizer value. Gardens love it! When you compost wet flushables, all of those good nutrients are recycled and available when the compost is ready, and can even replace expensive commercial fertilizer. The super absorber also works wonders by retaining moisture in the soil so it can be released gradually into your garden. This is especially useful in dry weather. Plus, you can reduce your watering bill.
Many brands of potting mix contain super absorber. It’s often referred to as “water holding crystals”.
Poopy flushables cannot be composted as human feces can contain bacteria and pathogens or in laymen’s terms: bugs that can make you very sick.
Human urine is generally sterile and safe to use without treatment. However if your baby has a urinary infection the urine may contain bacteria and it is best to take no chances and flush rather than put in the compost.
