gDiapers First Consumer Packaged Product to Receive Prestigious ‘Cradle to Cradle’ Certification by William McDonough and Michael Braungart Design Firm

PORTLAND, Ore., February28, 2006   gDiapers is the first consumer packaged product to receive the prestigious Cradle to Cradle design certification from eco-innovators, William McDonough and Michael Braungart’s design firm, MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC). gDiapers, a revolutionary new flushable diaper, consists of a cloth outer pant, (‘little g’) and a flushable refill. The product was designed to address the excessive amount of diapers and human waste in landfills.  The certification supports what McDonough and Braungart call the “new industrial revolution,” a design paradigm that seeks to transform human industry through ecologically intelligent design.

“50 million disposable diapers go into the landfill every day in the US where they sit for up to 500 years.  They are the third largest contributor to landfill and yet, they’re only used by 5% of the population for 4-5 hours at a time,” said Jason Graham-Nye, CEO and co-founder of gDiapers  “Flushing is good because it puts human waste, where it belongs, in the toilet. Not in a landfill.”

The Cradle to Cradle designation evaluated the materials of gDiapers flushable refill; the complete formulation for human and environmental health impacts throughout its lifecycle; and its potential for being truly recycled or safely composted. Certification also required the evaluation of energy-use, water-use, and workplace ethics of the company and its suppliers.

"More and more companies are finding compelling business and environmental reasons to move their product design in this direction. I encourage everyone to actively support the companies making Cradle to Cradle design a key component of their new product development,” said William McDonough.

About gDiapers

In 2004, Jason and Kimberly Graham-Nye bought the worldwide rights (excluding Australia and New Zealand) to manufacture, distribute and market the flushable diaper design first introduced in Australia in 1991. They discovered the design after the birth of their son, Fynn, prompted them to find a diapering option that worked for their baby, for them and for the planet. Since buying the rights, they have moved from Australia to the United States where they have established the gDiapers headquarters.  They chose the United States for its market potential, considering it’s the country with the most disposable diaper users and Portland for its reputation for being an epicenter for sustainable and environmentally friendly businesses.
