Is It Spring yet?

Maybe in Portland, or Austin, or even London. But after checking in with our composting friends in Leadville, CO last month…

“Still full on winter around here. Although regular trips down valley allow us to taste spring via bike rides, walks, and trips to the parks. Compost pile, along with the entire backyard, is still buried in several feet of snow. But it looks like all the melt occurring on the warm days is taking care of the inserts we’ve been putting in the pile, as I have a hard time finding anything from even a month ago. Perhaps a bumper crop of compost this year!?!”

Putting Compost to Work

Home composting is a fantastic way to take your everyday waste — kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, newspaper, gDiapers’ disposable inserts (wet ones only) — and turn it into nutrient-rich compost. That compost, in turn, can be mixed into garden soil to support healthy plants. Plants you can EAT!

“Initial trials of real food for Hobbes have gone quite well, and his favorite so far are the carrots we grew last summer. Kale and spinach are up soon…but he needs to master swallowing before we go there, and hard to say when that will happen. He has a knack for blowing raspberries right when you get a bite into his mouth (except with the carrots), so the floor and his clothes need constant cleaning. Tried avocados tonight, and Hattie got a kick out of helping to make guacamole and eating the “same” food as her brother (his had no additives other than breast milk for softening). She also loves to help feed him…only problem is that she’s so easily distracted that the food winds up on his face more often than not. 3 spoonfuls is about her patience limit on that activity.”

Ah. Sleep.

Does this sound familiar? The new sweet baby that sleeps so incredibly well. “She sleeps through the night already and she’s only 2 days old!” you might shout on Facebook. And one week later the space under your eyes has taken on a darker shade of exhausted as you wake for the third time in 2 hours and wonder if you’ll ever, EVER sleep again.

You Will.

“We’ve finally managed a decent sleep schedule for the little man. 7 hours of straight sleep never felt so good. He is possibly the happiest person I’ve ever known at 6am. All smiles the instant we get him, a fact that makes the morning so much easier and we feel fortunate that he is, in general, just a content and beaming little guy for the most part.”

Happy Hobbes.

Helpful Hattie.

“Hattie’s other favorite activity is stirring Hobbes’ gDiapers when they go into the toilet, and woe unto the poor soul who forgets to invite her in for the opportunity! “Is it a poopy one?” is the immediate question when we go to change him, and there is palpable disappointment when it’s not. This has been the case a majority of the time of late as Hobbes continues to get his plumbing adjusted for real food … nothing for days and then, WOW, not pretty. gDiaps hold their own for the standard mess, but nothing could contain some of these recent BM’s. We could do some good Shout/Oxyclean promos – hoping he gets the system in order soon.”

Next chapter in this On Location series just might have to be titled: On Location with Carrie and Cooper: A Solid Plan! We’re looking forward to hearing how the garden grows!
