Every Mother Counts: Running for maternal health

February 7, 2015

by Kim Graham-Nye, gDiapers co-founder

Two physical activities that should not happen simultaneously:
Being in labor. Walking up to 26 miles.

I couldn’t imagine walking across the living room when I was in labor, so the idea of having to walking up to 26 miles to seek emergency care in that physical and mental state is beyond comprehension. Yet this is the reality for countless women around the world in medically underserved regions. Even more alarming is that a woman dies every 2 minutes due to complications around pregnancy and birth, and astonishingly 98% of those deaths are preventable. When our son Fynn learned about these facts, he summed it up perfectly by saying, “If they are preventable, then WE HAVE TO help prevent them.” And I couldn’t agree more.

Surrogacy, the view from inside.

June 17, 2013

Thank you to Dana, a gestational surrogate, and Andy, a dad-to-be seeking a surrogate, for contributing their personal stories.

Dana.

I am a gestational surrogate. I recently gave birth to another couple’s baby, having gotten pregnant through IVF with a baby not genetically related to me. Being pregnant in this way has given me the opportunity to talk to so many people and have many conversations that I would ordinarily not have. When I was around thirty-eight weeks pregnant I had dropped my eleven year old son and seven year old daughter off at piano lessons and ran to Starbucks for a tall, soy, no classic, green tea Frappuccino. Thank you to Anni Daulter, author of Sacred Pregnancy the Book + Magazine, for giving the words and the long overdue air time to the most significant transformation that we go through as women.

What is a Sacred Pregnancy and why should I want one?

When I was pregnant with my second child, Lotus, I became obsessed with trying to find women I could connect with that knew about the sacredness of birth and the rite of passage process that every mother goes through, but few mark. My pregnancy craving was for that sisterhood that used to exist back in the day when women lived in tribes and pregnancy wisdom was passed down from mother to mother. Not being able to find what I was truly looking for, I realized something was missing in how we go through our pregnancies in this culture, and that sacred mother sisterhood had been buried, not lost, but buried deep in the past and needed to re-surge for all women. Our bodies create babies, and everyone agrees that is a miraculous wonder, but our spirits create souls and we need to know how to handle the process of creating a “whole” person. I truly believe the way to do this is by connecting to ourselves, the process of growing a baby and other wise women.
