On Location with Carrie and Cooper: Beneath the Snow

May 29, 2014

Is It Spring yet?

Maybe in Portland, or Austin, or even London. But after checking in with our composting friends in Leadville, CO last month…

“Still full on winter around here. Although regular trips down valley allow us to taste spring via bike rides, walks, and trips to the parks. Compost pile, along with the entire backyard, is still buried in several feet of snow. But it looks like all the melt occurring on the warm days is taking care of the inserts we’ve been putting in the pile, as I have a hard time finding anything from even a month ago. Perhaps a bumper crop of compost this year!?!”

On Location with Carrie and Cooper: A New Routine

April 4, 2014

Carrie and Cooper are 5 months in to life as a family of 4. And like speeding down a groomed slope only to come upon a long stretch of moguls, it’s all about being flexible and taking those bumps in stride. One such bump came with the shift from being an at-home mama, to Carrie going back to work teaching outside the home.

On location with Carrie and Cooper: Nesting.

October 25, 2013

Carrie and Cooper, our friends at high elevation, are heading in to the home-stretch. Baby #2 is coming very soon. And with cooling temperatures and the onset of snow, this Leadville family has headed indoors to prepare for baby’s arrival. Nesting is underway.

Beets, carrots, and spinach mostly … plus we arranged to get two boxes of 2nds apples that were turned into about 15 quarts of applesauce in one epic day of canning activities. Hattie is actually still working on last year’s batch, but figuring we’ll need all the extra we can get with an extra mouth in the house starting in six months or so. Many of Hattie’s gDiaper disposable inserts (wet ones only) helped to create the nutrients absorbed by the veggies that now constitute what will be some of little brother’s first bites of solid food.”

On location with Jess and James: life on the water.

September 23, 2013

You can’t control the waves of the ocean, but you can certainly learn to ride them. Few experiences ever turn out exactly as you plan them, a lesson Jess and James have learned early. From Rocket making her debut ahead of schedule while in port in Mexico, to a quick trip to Mexico City to secure vital travel documents for a brand new baby, to hopping a flight to Canada to introduce her to family, it has been one wave after the next. Which, of course, is what waves do. They just keep coming.
