In honor of our Goal! and Gay Paree raffles to support Gales Creek Camp for kids with diabetes, members of our community have reached out with their stories of how chronic illness has affected their and their children’s lives. Here, longtime gMum Jaimey shares the story of her son Grayson’s diagnosis with type 1 diabetes at the age of 6.
If you had asked me one year ago what the next year might look like, it never would have included the words “type 1 diabetes.” Sure enough, as dumb luck would have it, a year ago from today I was sitting at my friend Michelle’s kitchen counter testing my 6-year-old son’s blood sugar with her 6-year-old son’s blood sugar monitor for “peace of mind.”
After waiting what seemed like an eternity for the number to pop up (which in reality, took like three seconds), Michelle looked at the 360 on the screen. “That’s not peace of mind, you need to go to urgent care right now.” My brain went both numb and into full blown chaos in that moment.
Today marks 10 years and 2 months since Kim & I and our then 2 year old son, and yet-to-be born son #2 (and a Ridgy called Mohican) landed in the US to launch gDiapers. Much of the 3,700 days between that day and today are captured in a blog I have maintained since we landed. Here was my first post:
As we prepare to relocate to Australia in December with a 12 year old, a 9 year old, a new dog via Tanzania (Vale Mohican – you were a loyal and well traveled hound and played a key part in the gStory) a multitude of new friends and a lifetime of memories I will be focusing my writing here, covering a broad range of themes from our fabulous gMums to running a company, being a B Corporation, Cradle to Cradle product design, mindfulness, the latest rugby results and the sharing & circular economy. Watch this space!
Firstly, THANK YOU for the countless emails and notes of support we have received over the past month since we posted our ‘update’ on the gBlog. It is truly humbling. Jason and I are always blown away by the generosity of the gCommunity :0)
As we mentioned in our post, we had been facing some pretty massive headwinds the last few years, but with our announcement last month, it already feels like the winds are changing.
Kim & I wanted to reach out and give you an update on the latest news from gHQ.
gDiapers is coming up to its 10 year anniversary.
In that time we have evolved from a small start up in a garden shed in Sydney, Australia with just Kim & I and an idea, to a company with teams in the US and UK, championing the ideals of Cradle to Cradle product design and the values of being a B Corporation selling via major retailers, boutiques and online retailers.
