An ocean later: 8 months of extraordinary encounters, challenges, and milestones in our floating world

April 15, 2015

Once upon a time a lovely and expecting couple sent us an email that went something like this: “Hello. We’re pregnant and we live on a boat. We’d like to travel the world and use gDiapers. Can you help?” We said yes and launched our gDiapers: On Location blog series, a space dedicated to real families using g’s in unique living situations across the country (and beyond!). Jess, James and their baby girl, Rocket, have been traveling the world and riding the waves of parenting, all while striving for a sustainable lifestyle aboard their sailboat home. We are so honored to be sailing with them through their adventures. Read on for where they’ve been, and what (and who) lies just up ahead on the horizon.

Jaimey & Grayson: A Year with T1D

November 10, 2014

In honor of our Goal! and Gay Paree raffles to support Gales Creek Camp for kids with diabetes, members of our community have reached out with their stories of how chronic illness has affected their and their children’s lives. Here, longtime gMum Jaimey shares the story of her son Grayson’s diagnosis with type 1 diabetes at the age of 6.

Grayson and g go way back.
Grayson and g go way back.

If you had asked me one year ago what the next year might look like, it never would have included the words “type 1 diabetes.” Sure enough, as dumb luck would have it, a year ago from today I was sitting at my friend Michelle’s kitchen counter testing my 6-year-old son’s blood sugar with her 6-year-old son’s blood sugar monitor for “peace of mind.”

After waiting what seemed like an eternity for the number to pop up (which in reality, took like three seconds), Michelle looked at the 360 on the screen. “That’s not peace of mind, you need to go to urgent care right now.” My brain went both numb and into full blown chaos in that moment.

Be Kind

March 21, 2014

Finn The words “Be Kind”, “Don’t Fight” and “Love Big” were words that appeared on a series of t-shirts my now 11-year old son lived in when he was 5. It struck me then as it does now that these simple statements are so powerful. If we went out into the world everyday with this in mind, the world would be a very different place. It was my sons t-shirt that inspired us to create our “Be Kind” pant and remind ourselves of this simple gesture.

Be counted. The Big Latch On needs your support.

February 15, 2014

At gDiapers we’ve always believed that small acts can add up to big change. Over the past four years, the Big Latch On has shown how a grassroots, community-based event can get global fast. A Big Latch On event is simple—a group of women come together at a registered location to ‘latch on’ (breastfeed) their babies at a set time and raise their hands to be counted. Friends are made, fun is had, and every year breastfeeding records are broken. It’s fun and simple, but powerful.

Writing to heal. by Erin.

August 9, 2013

This is a very personal and emotional story from a mama in our community. She kindly offered to share it here so that others who are presently going through the trials of miscarriage might find solace and support. Thank you, Erin. We’re wrapping you in all the love we can muster.

I did some writing last night, it was so good for my soul, I thought I would share it with you all, my great supporters …

I have been pregnant 7 times. I’m blessed, I have two amazing little boys, a wonderful stepson and an amazing husband, but I also know the pain of loss, I know it really well.
